White Meritage = White Bordeaux
Bordeaux wines are recognized and sought after all around the world. You’ve probably heard of the “right bank” and “left bank” as well as the “noble grapes” but do you know that around 10% of Bordeaux wines are white blends?
Dry wines are blends of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon and are known for being light and fruity. They are produced all over the Bordeaux regions with some of the best wines coming from the Pessac Leognan and Graves appellations. Another significant appellation in the South West of France is Bergerac which is recognized for its dry white blends made from the same varieties as Bordeaux.
Sweet wines are best represented by the Sauternes appellation. But, in the South West of France, Monbazillac is a good source of sweet wines made from the same grapes found in Bordeaux.
The Sauternes blends include:
Semillon
The main varietal of Sauternes wines. The grapes have thin skin and are easily infected by Botrytis which helps to add texture and natural sweetness to the wine.
Sauvignon Blanc
The second most present varietal in the blend. The grapes are more resistant to noble rot and add acidity and crispness to the Sauternes.
Muscadelle
The third varietal added to Sauternes blends. The grapes are prone to noble rot and other grape diseases making them hard to grow. Muscadelle adds light floral aromas to the blend.
Our 2020 White Meritage is a blend of 50% Semillon and 50% Sauvignon Blanc both 100% from Virginia.
The blend was fermented and aged in stainless steel vessels to retain the characteristics of the varietals. Oak chips are added to the wine to add roundness and soften the bright acidity of Sauvignon Blanc.
